Thursday, January 3, 1963 vs. Marshall at Alumni Gym
After a six-game stretch on the schedule in which they played four road games and two contests at Chicago Stadium over thirteen days, the Ramblers got three days off before facing Marshall at Alumni Gym. Just over 2000 folks showed up on a weeknight with school out of session to welcome the #2 Loyola Ramblers back to campus.
Perhaps still a little tired from the grueling schedule, Loyola started off slowly. Loyola never trailed, but after eight minutes had passed Marshall tied the game at 17-all. The Ramblers proceeded to reel off a 20-4 run over the next five minutes, and led 54-29 at the break.
Loyola coasted to a 103-58 victory courtesy of 30 Marshall turnovers. It was Loyola's 12th victory of the season against no losses, their 13th straight victory overall, and their seventh time in 12 games scoring in triple digits. Loyola was averaging 100.3 points per game, and their average margin of victory was 29.3 points.
Clearly, the Ramblers were trying to hit the century mark against Marshall. Leading scorer Ron Miller didn't come out of the game until there were two and a half minutes left and Loyola had a 98-54 lead. Every Loyola starter scored at least 12 points, and 11 Loyola players ended up with minutes.
The Ramblers out-boarded Marshall 57-45, led by Harkness, Miller and Rouse with nine apiece. Phil Carter, an African-American senior that later became a professor of social work at Marshall, led all rebounders with 15 to go with his team-high 21 points.
